Emma Watson requested Guillermo del Toro for Beauty and the Beast?

If there’s one thing I love more than Emma Watson’s bitchface at the MTV Movie Awards, it’s good gossip.
A few days ago a good friend of mine told me Emma Watson will be starring in an adaptation of Beauty and the Beast. This isn’t surprising. She is not only pretty, but also classy and poised. What did strike me as interesting, though was a rumor on Perez Hilton (please believe me when I say I seldom visit his site, which borders on cyber bullying) that she was offered the script by Warner Bros., but convinced Guillermo del Toro to direct it:
“I’m doing a film with Guillermo [del Toro] next summer, and I went to him and said Warner Brothers have given me the script for ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ but the only way I’d really want to do it is if you did it. And then miraculously he said, ‘Oh, funnily enough ‘Beauty and the Beast’ is my favorite fairy tale, I can’t let anyone else do this, I’ll start putting a team together.’ ”
If this is true, I think Watson is making smart career decisions (except for her participation in Perks of Being a Wallflower, which looks like it’ll be about as endearing as The Art of Getting By *shudder). Taking advantage of her star power to get in touch with influential directors such as del Toro shows she can take the initiative and network.
So what kind of adaptation will this be? Will Belle be given a feminist makeover, as seems to be the trend? If Alice and Snow White can wield a sword, then why can’t Belle hide artillery under her petticoats? Hell no, she ain’t need no man! Judging by del Toro’s last fantasy film, Pan’s Labyrinth, Beauty and the Beast will be fo sho more morbid than the Disney version.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the script was originally going to be an adaptation of Beauty: A Retelling of the Beauty and the Beast by Robin McKinley but the idea’s been scrapped. I really hope screenwriter, Andrew Davies will incorporate the story of King Bluebeard. It’s a French version of the fairy tale, and much creepier. (For those of you who aren’t familiar with it, I highly recommend Angela Carter’s The Bloody Chamber. SUCH a good adaptation!)
I’m sure Watson is feeling smug about her post-Harry Potter decisions. This smugness sometimes shows in her facial expressions. Which is why I’m praying she will attend the MTV VMAs on Thursday.
