After years of dying to go, this April I finally took the tube down to the O2 to attend the Sundance Film Festival. This was its second year in London, where it screened films such as Mud, Upstream Color, Running From Crazy, Touchy Feely and Whiplash. I went to a screening of Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes. If I’d had more time I would’ve gone to see A.C.O.D. and The Look of Love too.

Emanuel was a beautiful film. Very artsy, very Sundance. I’ll post a review in a separate post. All I’ll say is I cried right before the question and answer panel with the director, Francesca Gregorini.

Gregorini is ballsy. She has a quick sense of humor and is quite frank in her answers. I hadn’t realized it at first, but she’s the same woman who co-directed Tanner Hall, starring the not-yet-famous Rooney Mara. Emanuel was originally written with Mara in mind, but by the time the film was funded, she was too old to play the part. Gregorini calls this a blessing in disguise because she got to cast Kaya Scodelario. You might remember her as Effy from Skins. To me she looks like a love child of Kristen Stewart and Emma Stone. Very striking on screen. She’ll be one to watch since she’s signed on to the franchise Maze Runner.
