Sex addicts: The Movie

It’s hard for me to take sex addiction seriously, mostly because I always remember the Sex Addicts Anonymous scene in Blades of Glory. Gwyneth Paltrow’s character puts it perfectly in the Thanks For Sharing trailer: “Isn’t that just something guys say when they get caught cheating?” (Cough, Tiger Woods.) Apparently researchers share her skepticism: In a UCLA study of people um, obsessed with sex, their brains do not respond to sexual stimuli in the same way an addict’s would. Researchers theorize it could be a mental problem rather than an addiction. Or maybe they’re just douchebags.

There are a few movies out this fall and winter that touch on the subject. The one I’m most excited to see is Don Jon, Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s directorial debut of which he also stars. It’s about a New Jersey guy who falls for a “perfect ten” played by Scarlett Johansson but struggles with his unrealistic expectations of sex and love because of his obsession with porn. For a rookie, it looks like Levitt might have done a decent job. Coincidentally I just found out that James Franco has directed nine movies that nobody knows about. (The Ape looks horrendous.)

Thanks for Sharing literally revolves around people struggling with sex addiction while trying to maintain a relationship. It looks funny enough, and I’m partial to Mark Ruffalo. And P!nk’s in it so…

If those two are too fluffy for you art house hipsters, then there’s the hump fest also known as Nymphomaniac. You know, the one where Shia Labeouf has sex onscreen. It stars Charlotte Gainsbourg as a woman who recounts her sexual experiences to a man who saves her after a beating. It’s directed by Lars von Trier, the same nutcase that brought you Melancholia. You know, the one where Kirsten Dunst pretends to have sex in a field. Nymphomaniac will be released on Christmas day in Denmark, just in time for some wholesome family fun.
