GQ has just released a few excerpts from its interview with Charlize Theron, who’s promoting The Huntsman: Winter’s War (is anyone actually going to pay to watch this?). Here’s the quote that’s making everyone so angry:

Jobs with real gravitas go to people that are physically right for them and that’s the end of the story. How many roles are out there for the gorgeous, f***ing, gown-wearing eight-foot model? When meaty roles come through, I’ve been in the room and pretty people get turned away first.

Here’s the Internet’s response:

I don’t want to judge too harshly because this quote’s lacking context. But to say that “pretty people” don’t have first pick of “meaty roles” is bullsh-t. Case in point: Margot Robbie just got cast to play Tonya Harding, the “ugly duckling” of figure skating. Sure, I’m sure she’s qualified, but I’m interested in who else was considered for the part.

Remember when Chloë Grace Moretz was cast in Carrie? A plain Jane who’s bullied mercilessly at school for being weird? As Chris Rock would say, that was practically Sci-Fi.

Winona Ryder and Meryl Streep have talked about being turned away from auditions for not being considered attractive enough. Barbra Streisand’s looks have been picked apart by critics. Gina Rodriguez has said her potential to be on the cover of magazines was one casting director’s actual criteria. Last year, Amy Schumer parodied 12 Angry Men in a sketch about whether or not she was hot enough to be on TV.

We still live in an age where people are offended by Lena Dunham appearing nude on Girls. As if someone who’s not considered a conventional 10 doesn’t deserve a leading role.

Sure, there are stories like how Scarlett Johansson was deemed too hot to star in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. But more times than not, Boobs McGee will have a better chance at being cast than Ugly Betty.
