Michelle and Barack Obama’s first date is now a rom-com

When couples tell you their first date was adorable and epic, very few are actually right. An exception to the rule is my grandparents, who met at a dance in the Philippines 60 years ago. And now Michelle and Barack Obama, whose love will now forever be immortalized in the form of a cheesy rom-com called Southside With You.
The film follows the future First Lady and POTUS on their first date in Chicago in 1989, as lawyer, Barack (Parker Sawyers) attempts to charm his sassy co-worker, Michelle (Tika Sumpter). On this whirlwind day, the pair watch Do the Right Thing, take a romantic stroll and kiss while sharing an ice cream cone.
Although Sawyers and Sumpter seem earnest and cute, the trailer suffers from poor dialogue. While it’s not William & Kate: The Movie levels of cringe, it’s not exactly Shakespeare In Love, either. I’m still willing to give it a chance, though.
