Of course she came. Even though there were rumors that she wouldn’t show, André Leon Talley confirmed to Vogue.com that she would in fact, fly out in the middle of her Formation tour for the Oscars of fashion. And why wouldn’t she? She’s been dominating the conversation since Lemonade came out. And where else other than the Met Gala to make a statement without having to say a single word?

All the drama started in an elevator two years ago at the very same event. People were talking about a divorce and division of assets all in the middle of a joint tour. That was the first time Beyoncé wasn’t in control. And as I wrote in my Lemonade review, Beyoncé will open up to us only when she’s holding the reigns. Now, knowing what we know, what do you think she wanted to communicate this time?

Well, she showed up alone. And her look was a lot more relaxed. Don’t get me wrong. Of course she aimed to shut it down in Givenchy (which she name dropped in “Formation”). But remember the naked dress and high pony from last year? (At the last minute, she told her hairstylist to change her hair in five minutes in the elevator.) There was a whiff of trying too hard to distract us from everything that had transpired. Now? Beyoncé is back in her zone: Not giving a single f-ck. Or at least looking like she doesn’t.
