This story made me cringe so hard. Ruby Rose has since tried to defend herself on Facebook, but the damage is already done.
Ruby Rose was in New Oreans last week for a DJ gig. On Friday night she and some friends went to dinner at Rebellion Bar and Urban Kitchen. They weren’t taking any reservations since it was already fully booked, but because the owner recognized Rose, she and her party were seated 15 minutes after their arrival.
Their appetizers were ready 40 minutes after, followed by their entrees 10 minutes later. Apparently that wasn’t fast enough for Rose. When the waiter couldn’t reason with her group, owner, Seung Hong was called over. Via Gossip Cop:
Rose was “losing her cool,” Hong told NOLA.com, even though he offered to give her table their appetizers for free and buy them a round of drinks, which she declined. He claims Rose next threw food at the bartender, and told him that if she were bigger, “She would kick [Hong’s] ass.” The bartender similarly offered to comp a round of drinks, and supposedly as he walked away, a French fry hit him. When he asked Rose and the group whether there was a problem, Hong says she cursed out the bartender and “picked up a handful of French fries and threw them at him.”
The owner said because she was so “horrible” and “awful,” it was the “first time I’ve ever had to ask someone to leave.” Gossip Cop has reached out to a rep for Rose, but has yet to hear back.
OOF. When even Gossip Cop, the most celebrity-friendly gossip site can’t defend you, you know you’ve f-cked up.
The story went viral on Facebook last night, after which Rose wrote a statement on her own page:
Fry-day the 13th
My assistant, tour manager and myself arrived at an establishment last night for dinner before my show in New Orleans.
We waited 60 minutes for fries and over 90 minutes for food that never actually arrived. When I asked about it, the bartender offered us drinks. I explained I'm sober, but thank you.
He then made some really rude and vulgar comments to the table. When someone makes repeated derogatory jokes about the sobriety I worked so hard to achieve, it's hard not to react emotionally. So I threw a singular fry at him. Then he came back as we were getting ready to leave and continued making awful comments, so I continued with the fries. Every day I learn new lessons about handling cultural and social ignorance. I am deeply regretful to the French fry and I am regretful that I reacted at all. Maybe next time I won’t throw fries, then again, maybe next time that bartender won’t tell someone who is sober to “go call your f**king sponsor!”
I worked in hospitality for 5 years and I have huge love, respect and admiration for servers around the world and how hard they work. I also have mad love for New Orleans and I want to come back 100 times if you will have me. Next time, dinner at my place. wink emoticon
I don’t know how you can justify throwing fries at staff. The fact that she even started to get physical with them makes me doubt anything else she has to say.
I’ve never worked in hospitality before, but as someone who works in sales at the mall, I’m sympathizing more with the staff. A lot of people treat you like you’re not even human, and it sucks even more when you’re being paid minimum wage.
Rose, however, does not have to worry about that. She’s rich and famous and people love her. I’m sure this is nothing a charming Carpool Karaoke can’t fix.
