Pixar has debuted a new trailer for Finding Dory featuring a lesbian couple. While the Internet is celebrating because this is probably the first time in history a same-sex couple has appeared in a Disney Pixar movie, they don’t seem to be major characters. Or fish. Watch the video below, and you’ll see them at the 1:06 mark.

When I first read the headlines this morning, I was expecting Dory to find a girlfriend, which would lead to the charming spinoff movie 50 First Fish. What I got instead was a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo made by a lesbian couple with a baby. It’s progress, yes, but they don’t seem to even be part of the main storyline.

It’s especially frustrating because there is already such little representation of LGBT characters in film and TV, let alone stuff kids watch. Recently, #GiveElsaAGirlfriend and #GiveCaptainAmericaABoyfriend started trending on Twitter because there has been a severe lack of queer characters in Disney movies and comic blockbusters.

Another reason there’s been such a demand for more representation is the “bury your gays” trope. Fans lost their sh-t when Lexa was killed off of The 100 because once again, a gay couple finally got together and had sex, only for one of them to be axed off the show. It wouldn’t be such a problem if there were more queer characters in movies or on TV, but right now “bury your gays” is more the rule than the exception.

Bascially what I’m saying is we’re tired of writing Bert and Ernie slash fiction and we’re ready for Disney and Pixar to make our fan fiction dreams come true.
